Collect Three Colors on Your Next Walk

A bird perched among branches in an aviary.

A white bird, a flash of yellow, then black and white against the branches. Our aviary reel works like a small collection of colors.

You can borrow the idea without making a species checklist. Pick three colors before a walk or visit, then notice where each turns up. Birds are one possibility; leaves, flowers, and the surroundings can supply the rest.

Let each person notice something different

If you are watching with kids, take turns choosing a color. One person might spot a whole yellow bird while another notices a tiny bright patch in a much busier scene. Both make the collection more interesting.

There is no need to race or collect anything physically. A description, a sketch, or a photo from the viewing path is enough to remember the find.

Keep the background in the picture

In our footage, the branches matter as much as the feather colors. They give the birds places to sit and give the brighter areas something quieter around them. A color is easier to notice when you also see what sits beside it.

On a second watch, pick the bird that stood out first and look at its background. Then watch again for a different color.

The collection is small enough to remember: three stops in the aviary, three different looks. The birds provide the palette and carry it away when they leave.
