The Neighbor With the Best Vantage Point

An upright meerkat looking out from a raised spot.

Every neighborhood seems to have someone who knows what happened outside. This meerkat has chosen the sort of spot that would make the job considerably easier.

The upright pose supplies most of the joke. Add the vantage point and the attentive-looking face, and the scene starts to resemble a resident checking on an unfamiliar car at the curb.

The view is doing some work

Watch how much of the scene sits below the meerkat. Its position makes it the obvious center of attention even before anything changes. You look toward the face, then naturally wonder what it can see beyond the edge of the frame.

We cannot see that view ourselves. The camera gives us the observer rather than the thing being observed. That is part of what makes the little scene hold your attention.

No report has been filed

Our neighborhood-watch caption is a joke about the posture, not a transcript of the animal's thoughts. There is no need to invent an approaching visitor or a dramatic warning to enjoy the resemblance.

Sometimes the whole story is an animal standing in a way that feels oddly familiar. The shoulders, the height, the apparent seriousness: it is an excellent character moment supplied by a few seconds of real footage.

If anything interesting happens outside, this seems like a reasonable place to start asking.
