We had the camera ready. The toucan was at the feeder. There were leaves, a branch, and all the makings of a pleasant little bird video.
Then our subject left.
No lingering look back. No final pose. Just a takeoff, followed by a surprisingly long amount of footage of a perfectly ordinary empty branch.
A brief appointment
Watching the clips together, the story almost wrote itself: came for lunch, stayed for absolutely nothing.
That is our interpretation, of course. The bird did not submit an itinerary. But anyone who has ever attended an event mainly for the food will recognize the timing.
One moment, the feeder is the center of attention. A moment later, the bird is gone and the camera is still there, apparently waiting for an explanation.
There wasn't one.
The empty branch gets a supporting role
Usually, the bit after an animal leaves would be the first thing to cut. Here, it was the ending.
The empty perch is what makes the little departure funny. We kept that pause in the short video because sometimes the best part of a clip is the part where nothing else happens.
No dramatic encounter. No invented animal dialogue. Just a bird getting on with its day while we catch up.
These are the moments we like collecting at Green Stand Market: small, real, and a little more entertaining than expected. They belong in the camera roll right alongside home projects, kitchen experiments, and whatever the cat has decided to supervise.
The toucan's visit was brief. Its position on small talk was very clear.
